Yakisugi (焼杉) is a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation. Yaki means to heat with fire, and sugi is cypress. It is also referred to in the West as burnt timber cladding and available under a number of brands including Shou Sugi Ban (焼杉板) which uses the same kanji characters but a different pronunciation. The ban character means "plank".
By slightly charring the surface of the wood without combusting the whole piece, the wood becomes water-proof through the carbonisation and is thus more durable.[3] It also protects against insects, as well as making it fire retardant.
Easy to apply in thin layers with a brush, cloth or roller. Tung Oil naturally protects all types of wood indoors and outdoors. I recommend pure Tung Oil for outdoor use. Flexible and resistant protection. 100% natural.
The PB600 Burned Wood Protector impregnates, fixes and protects the charred surface of the wood obtained by burning. This protective product makes burnt wood, or Shou Sugi Ban, easy to handle, without leaving carbon traces on hands or clothing. It reinforces the surface carbon layer to protect it durably from bad weather (rain, wind, sun) outdoors and friction indoors, thus making it possible to retain the original black burnt appearance for a long time. Available in 1, 2, 5 or 10L.
