Yakisugi (焼杉) is a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation. Yaki means to heat with fire, and sugi is cypress. It is also referred to in the West as burnt timber cladding and available under a number of brands including Shou Sugi Ban (焼杉板) which uses the same kanji characters but a different pronunciation. The ban character means "plank".
By slightly charring the surface of the wood without combusting the whole piece, the wood becomes water-proof through the carbonisation and is thus more durable.[3] It also protects against insects, as well as making it fire retardant.
The PB600 Burned Wood Protector impregnates, fixes and protects the charred surface of the wood obtained by burning. This protective product makes burnt wood, or Shou Sugi Ban, easy to handle, without leaving carbon traces on hands or clothing. It reinforces the surface carbon layer to protect it durably from bad weather (rain, wind, sun) outdoors and friction indoors, thus making it possible to retain the original black burnt appearance for a long time. Available in 1, 2, 5 or 10L.
No technical data sheet currently available. This product is used when the wood can come into contact with hands. The carbon layer is hardened so that it will crumble less quickly. In addition, a water-repellent effect will also be visible. This product is transparent and matte. This is also available in a more shiny finish.
